Balance is Key

I know there can be a lot of trouble surrounding “everything in moderation.”

It’s hard to know where that line is, but restriction doesn’t work for most people.

Riddle me this… If I told you today that you could never have a food you enjoy again (bread, rice, chocolate, sushi, whatever it is for you!), would you want it more or less?

I’d be willing to bet you’d be having it in the next month, but likely in the next week.

For most of us, our brains are hard-wired to dislike restriction, especially when it’s food that we are craving. What happens is we don’t know where to balance things out, and even when we’re working to create space in our life for healthy nutrition, we feel guilt when we eat something “not on plan” or “non-compliant.” When we know we can’t have something, we want it even more.

So what if your diet, your nutrition plan, and your nutritionist all understood that life requires balance?

Life happens. Friends come into town, your work week is hectic, you want that glass of wine on Friday night or slice of cake at the birthday party, or you end up at a burger bar.

Restricting yourself isn’t going to get you where you want if it means that you are craving that special something even more, and creating a mind game around it in the process.

Here’s what balance looks like:

It looks like skipping bread and potatoes at dinner, and enjoying a glass of wine and dessert instead.

It looks like not exercising on vacation, and instead walking on the beach for 5 miles daily.

It looks like staying on track and strict all week, and enjoying your date night out with your husband without stressing about your food.

It looks like being in the moment, enjoying your life and the food that nourishes you - both physically and mentally.
